The Giovanni Consort concludes its subscription series with the Australian Premiere of Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles. Commissioned by the Tenebrae Choir (arguably England's finest choral ensemble) in 2004, this vast work for 17-part choir has become one of the great masterworks of the past ten years, and has only been performed a handful of times. The Giovanni Consort will become just the seventh choir to perform the work in its entirety, marking the development of the ensemble over the past five years.
The work is based on the most enduring route of Catholic pilgrimage – the great Pilgrimage to Santiago. The four movements of ‘Path of Miracles’ are titled with the names of the four main staging posts of the ‘Camino Frances’. The ‘Camino Frances’ is the central axis of a network of pilgrimage routes to Santiago. In performance, the space of the building is used to great effect, demonstrating the progression of the pilgrimage.
