My first performances for 2025 are at the Sydney Festival with Bach Akademie Australia from 9-11 January. It’s one of my favourite times to be in Sydney - and in the height of what is usually a very warm summer I like to escape into the cool of the concert hall or theatre when I can!

The two performances are at Walsh Bay (The Nielsen, Pier 2/3 home of the ACO) and form part of a myriad of events being held at ‘The Wharf’ as part of the Festival.

From the Sydney Festival website

When Galileo’s father, Vincenzo, was composing in the 16th century, the heavens were thought to have their own music, audible to the soul. Even today, the ‘heavenly dance’ of the stars and planets evokes a sense of inevitable destiny, elegant precision and timeless mystery. Those same qualities can be heard in the intricate creations of Johann Sebastian Bach, and it’s one of the reasons his music continues to resonate.

The music of Bach – perfect and universal – is the connecting thread in a compelling program that looks to the heavens for inspiration. Voices and instruments will dance and resound in music from the high Renaissance to our own time, from Europe to the Pacific and First Nations Australia – with the Morning Star as our guiding light.

It’s the kind of concert for which Madeleine Easton and the Bach Akademie Australia have become known: intellectually satisfying, emotionally rewarding and thrilling to the senses.

Rounding out my year with Pinchgut Opera – I’m delighted to be 'bookending’ with Handel and singing the role of Curio in the ever-popular Giulio Cesare which will feature Tim Mead in the title role and Samantha Clarke as Cleopatra.

TICKETS & INFORMATION

From the Pinchgut Opera website

A shining success from its very first performance in 1724, Julius Caesar is now one of the most famous Baroque operas of all time. With its irresistible blend of passion and intrique, it was the perfect vehicle for Handel's dramatic genius

The story plunges us into the bloodthirsty world of the Roman empire

Caesar's rival Pompeo has been cruelly executed by the Egyptian king, Tolomeo But while Pompeo's widow grieves and his son Sesto vows vengeance, Tolomeo's sister Cleopatra decides to seduce Caesar to tip the balance of power in her own favour.

However, as events unfold, Cleopatra and Caesar discover that they have fallen in love. Tolomeo's defeat is now imperative, and a feud between the siblings becomes an all-out war.

With alliances constantly shifting, who will emerge victorious?

Celebrated Australian director Neil Armfield (Platée, 2021) makes his much-anticipated return to the Pinchgut stage, with a spectacular cast and creative team to bring a fresh perspective to Handel's masterpiece, while allowing it to resonate in all its splendour.

English countertenor Tim Mead makes his Pinchgut debut in the title role, while Australian star soprano Samantha Clarke will seduce us all as Cleopatra.

A sensational production to cap off a year of Baroque wonders, with every voice and instrument from this phenomenal lineup of artists perfectly placed for maximum pleasure in the brilliant acoustic of City Recital Hall.

About this performance

This dynamic program opens with the third piece in Katy Abbott's award-winning Hidden Thoughts series. Based on the stories of anonymous participants, this piece sets individual stories and the collective voice to music, capturing and delivering the very human experience of awe. The stories tell of unexpected encounters, of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, of being moved by music, art, nature, kindness and courage. Collective effervescence, spiritual awakenings, the delicacy and complexity of nature and the infinitesimal self within it.

If you’d like to contribute a story to Hidden Thoughts III, please complete a short anonymous survey at: bit.ly/stories-of-awe

Ground-breaking composer Max Richter’s minimalist-inspired music is equally at home in the concert hall as it is on screen, having featured in Arrival, and episodes of Black Mirrorand The Last of Us, among many others. His innovative fresh take on Vivaldi’s Four Seasonstopped the classical charts in 22 countries in 2012, and continues to awe devotees of the original and new fans alike.

The world premiere of a major new work by Australia's most beloved composer performed by the country's finest singers and instrumentalists

Sunday 23 June, 3pm
40th Anniversary Gala Concert
Sydney – City Recital Hall

Join us in celebrating The Song Company's 40th Anniversary with a musical event like no other—the world premiere of Vespers for Mother Earth, an astonishing composition by beloved composer Ross Edwards. Joining them on stage in this historic performance at the prestigious City Recital Hall is an eclectic array of instrumental forces, including the groundbreaking Ensemble Offspring, Genevieve Lang (harp), Julian Smiles (cello), Lu Liu (pipa) and Lindsay Dugan (shakuhachi).

Inspired by Monteverdi's masterpiece Vespero della Beata Vergine, Edwards ingeniously weaves symbols of day and night into a profound contemplation on the pressing ecological crisis of our time. It symbolises both a farewell to humanity's destructive dominance and the dawn of a new era — a rekindling of the sacred feminine principle, embodied by the night.

In an eagerly anticipated moment, long-term Artistic Director of The Song Company Roland Peelman returns to direct after a nine-year absence. His masterful guidance ensures this performance will be a true testament to our 40-year journey of excellence.

The program's first half is a celebration of our rich history of collaborations with luminaries of Australian music, including Peter Sculthorpe, Elena Kats-Chernin, Nigel Butterly and Katy Abbott. We also look to the future, showcasing the next generation of composers, including Alice Chance and Sonya Hollowell, and a captivating new work by Angus Davison.

Well, in one of those things you never quite expected or anticipated, I am still shocked myself to reveal that I am writing some of the music to be performed in this Sydney Philharmonia Choirs ChorusOz event at the Sydney Opera House. Also featuring the voices of AVE (Australian Vocal Ensemble) and most chiefly Katie Noonan (whose fault it is I have been dared to write music!) it will be a surreal moment to hear a little piece of my own musical brain be sung by hundreds of others on one of the iconic stages of the world.

From the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs website

ChorusOz | The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace

ChorusOz – our annual ‘big sing’ at the Sydney Opera House – brings together singers from across Australia and around the world for an inspiring weekend of community and music-making.

Brett Weymark has chosen The Armed Man: one of the most popular choral works of our time, with thousands of performances and decades in the classical charts. Its starting point is a mediæval earworm (L’Homme armé) but the themes are absolutely contemporary.

Inspired by the tragedy of the Kosovo War, Karl Jenkins combines sacred and secular texts. It’s exhilarating music to perform, with a parade of musical styles, thought-provoking texts and powerful emotions. Equally exhilarating are the choral hymns Finlandia and Jerusalem. And – for the first time the 16-year history of ChorusOz – we’ve commissioned a new Australian work especially for this event.

Whether you’re in the middle of the choir singing at full voice, or joining us in the audience, find harmony singing for peace.

Sing in ChorusOz 2024: open to singers of any ability – no prior singing experience required. Find details and register below.

About the Music

One of J.S. Bach’s most joyous and universally popular works, the Magnificat in D Major, brings trumpets, timpani, oboes, flutes, and strings together in a glorious celebration of sound.

The source of one of Bach's most popular duets is a cantata that includes a choral passacaglia, an entrancing aria for tenor and flute, and a flawlessly composed aria for bass and solo oboe.

Bach's tribute to a beloved heroine of Saxony, the Electress Christiane Eberhardine, stands uniquely among his most extraordinary works. The rich orchestration, including two violas da gamba, supports the distinguished poetry of one of the greatest reformers of the German language of all time. Each group of instruments is featured in movements that include an astonishingly pictorial recitative depicting bells.

About the Artists

The performers on this concert are all part of the 2023 ABS ACADEMY, a tuition-free advanced training program exclusively for emerging professionals and highly accomplished students of Historically Informed Performance Practice.

The Academy was founded in 2010 with the purpose of providing mentorship and artistic support to those musicians who are seeking to bridge the gap between advanced conservatory, university, or personal studies and an emerging career, either as soloists, chamber musicians, or with professional early music institutions.

Since the ACADEMY's inaugural year, more than 500 participants have been admitted from around the world, representing Australia, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Republic of Singapore, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United States, and Venezuela.

It's been almost a decade since I was last in the U.S. so I'm very much looking forward to this unique professional development opportunity as well as catching up with some old friends!

I will be the Bass Soloist in the rarely heard Mozart orchestration of Handel’s Messiah in a 20 November performance at The Concourse, Concert Hall, Chatswood with the Willoughby Symphony Choir and Orchestra. The Mozart version (we’re still singing in English, not German) has a few small changes of orchestration, and a slight tapering of some movements - but retains all of the heart of soul of Handel’s masterwork.

I am delighted to be sharing the stage with friends and colleagues Amy Moore, Hannah Fraser, and Richard Butler all conducting by Peter Ellis.

Come along if you can! And if you can’t (or live interstate) the performance will be available to stream via the Australian Digital Concert Hall platform.

Halcyon presents First Stones in July, an intensive composer development program focusing on the voice and vocal writing. First Stones is perfect for composers who are keen to learn more about working with voice and exploring the diversity of contemporary vocal composition. It is designed to lay foundations, deepen understanding and help produce better and more confident composers for the voice. Stage 1 of the program is also ideal for singing students or teachers who want to learn more about contemporary composers for voice and broaden their repertoire.

Held over two weekends in July (9-10 and 16-17), First Stones is an exciting opportunity for emerging Australian composers to hone their skills with Australia’s pre-eminent vocal chamber music ensemble and composer-mentor Elliott Gyger.

I am looking forward to joining Jenny Duck-Chong, Elliott Gyger and the emerging composers selected for this program for the second weekend of workshops in July. Jenny is an extraordinary musician and Halcyon such an important organisation in the landscape of Australian Contemporary Art and Vocal Music.

A concert featuring some of the most sublime sacred music ever written.

The Spiritual Forest is drawn from Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale (1641), his great anthology of liturgical works composed during his career in Venice. It was to be the last collection of Monteverdi’s music published in his lifetime, and represents the final flowering of his great genius.

These uniquely inspired works confirmed Monteverdi as the leading composer of his generation, exemplifying his consummate compositional prowess and his ability to put into music the deepest of human emotions.

Australia’s premier Baroque chorus of professional singers, Cantillation, will be joined by a band of 14 specialist orchestral players to deliver a transcendent sonic experience.

I was extremely fortunate to win the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Aria Competition in 2020 - and as part of my ‘prize’ I was engaged by the RMP to perform in their performance of Handel’s Messiah in late 2020. The organisation has a long and storied relationship with this work, holding the world record for its 241 performances of the work since 1853 - with annual performances even during both World Wars and now the Covid-19 Pandemic.

To be involved in the recording of this work at this time of year, particular given Melbourne’s year of ‘lockdown’ was an honour, especially as this was for many their very first musical engagement in at least 8 months. Sincere thanks to all who organised and arranged for this to be possible.

The broadcast will be made on multiple occasions from December 24 - 26 and information and tickets will be available from the RMP Website on 16 December.

From the RMP Website:

HANDEL’S MESSIAH

A DIGITAL BROADCAST

Handel’s Messiah

World-record performance to be broadcast online for the first time in RMP’s history!

The 37th Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Concert

“The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra delivered another vibrant and polished reading. Music director Andrew Wailes conducted with precision and infectious energy urging the chamber-sized orchestra and 100-strong choir to some stirring renditions of the big choir pieces including the famous Hallelujah, Glory to God and For unto us a Child is born. Wailes favouring brisk tempos made for exciting listening…” – The Age

Royal Melbourne Philharmonic presents Handel’s iconic Messiah for the 241st time, in an unbroken annual sequence of performances in Melbourne since Christmas Eve, 1853 which is today recognized as a world-record. Despite two world wars, various pandemics, the great depression, fires, floods, and several financial crises, this very special Melbourne tradition has continued, due to the spirit and passion of many generations of RMP musicians. This year, with the Covid-19 pandemic closing down theatres, cathedrals, and concert halls around the world, the RMP has been planning how to continue this tradition, whilst still being able to conform with public safety regulations and social distancing restrictions.

As a result, for the first time in its venerable history, the RMP will this year stream a specially filmed version of Handel’s great masterpiece, and present it for online viewing in time for Christmas.

The world’s most-loved oratorio, famous for its sparkling and deeply-moving arias, and brilliant choruses (including the magnificent Hallelujah! Chorus), Handel’s Messiah has been performed in all sorts of venues – from great concert halls to intimate chapels, all across the globe. Indeed it was the Hall of the Mechanic’s Institution on Collins St in colonial Melbourne where the RMP first performed the piece. Each performance has its own charm, and this year will be no exception, with a unique filmed presentation tailored for at-home viewing, and filmed in one of Melbourne’s most beautiful and historic churches.

Featuring a baroque-scaled chamber ensemble of RMPO players, and talented choristers from the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir, this year’s performance will feature four outstanding soloists, and be directed by RMP Chief Conductor Andrew Wailes – widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost exponents of this great work.

Welsh-born soprano Amelia Jones will make her debut as a soloist with the RMP at this concert, having recently been named winner of the Conductor’s Encouragement Award at the 2020 RMP Aria Competition. Much-loved Australian mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell returns to a familiar role, and will be joined at this concert by the internationally-acclaimed Eglish tenor Christopher Watson, a former lay clerk at Durham Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and Westminster Cathedral in London, and longstanding member of The Tallis Scholars and Theatre of Voices, with whom he won a Grammy Award in 2010. Rounding out this outstanding cast will be the 2020 Winner of the RMP Aria, and one of Australia’s leading oratorio soloists, the Sydney-based bass-baritone Andrew O’Connor.

For more than 170 years, The RMP’s annual performance of this masterpiece has been a much-anticipated highlight of Melbourne’s concert calendar. Whilst this year’s online performance will look and sound a little different to the now-familiar Melbourne Town Hall experience, it will offer viewers a new look at this great work of supreme musical virtuosity, and spiritual power.

Conductor Andrew Wailes promises “a few lovely surprises this year”, and a “memorable Messiah performed in the magnificent setting of one of Australia’s most beautiful churches” which, he adds “will, in itself add a certain visual beauty and spiritual profundity to this year’s rendition”.

Don’t miss being part of this wonderful musical tradition.

“Wailes made sure that the pace did not slacken… Wailes, who cuts a dapper, self-possessed figure on the podium, showed an impressive compulsion, driving his forces along with insistent power. It is hard to recall when this oratorio has been treated with such attention given to its dramatic potential; no singer – soloist or chorister – was given latitude to generate that fruity and orotund timbre familiar from performances of 20 years ago.”

BACH AKADEMIE AUSTRALIA – BACH’S UNIVERSAL LIGHT

For so many of us, 2020 has been exceptionally hard thus far. With this in mind, we present a journey from darkness into light through Bach’s universal genius. ‘In memoriam’ for 2020, we begin with his haunting early cantata ‘Actus Tragicus’. Paring the music back to just one instrument, Bach’s solo works are featured drawing us towards a turning point of hope and light. No composition of his urges us onwards towards joy more than his Brandenburg Concerto no. 4.
